Cast Iron Mechanical Coin Bank – Antique Reproduction
Punch and Judy mechanical coin bank styled after late 19th-century American cast iron toy banks. Mechanical banks became popular between the 1870s and early 1900s, combining entertainment with savings by rewarding a deposited coin with a small moving action.
The Punch and Judy theme originates from traditional European puppet theatre, later becoming a familiar subject for American toy makers. Original banks produced by companies such as J. & E. Stevens Co. featured theatrical scenes where depositing a coin gave you the opportunity to create a short mechanical performance.
This example follows that historic form, with a stage-front design and hand-painted detailing typical of classic mechanical bank reproductions. To operate it you pull the tap to load it, place the coin then hit the switch for the action to deposit the coin.
