The design is inspired by unusual figural meat and herb choppers of the 19th century. Documented antique examples include fox-form iron choppers dating to the second quarter of the 1800s, when decorative animal silhouettes were occasionally incorporated into practical kitchen implements.
These curved-blade choppers were traditionally used with a rocking or chopping motion to mince meat, herbs, and vegetables on wooden cutting boards or in chopping bowls. The combination of a functional blade and whimsical animal form reflects the craftsmanship and decorative character of 19th-century domestic ironwork.
