Made in-house in the USA, this piece is individually hand-filed and finished to achieve the irregular edges, subtle surface variations, and aged character associated with traditional blacksmith workmanship. The iron has been given a dark, textured patina that emphasizes its simple construction and early folk art appearance.
Primitive iron skewer rack featuring a decorative heart-shaped upper terminal with a pierced circular opening, a shaped central stem, and a horizontal crossbar terminating in two gracefully curled hooks. Four slender iron skewers hang from the crossbar, each with a looped end for suspension.
Skewer racks were familiar accessories of 18th- and early 19th-century open-hearth kitchens, providing a convenient place to suspend roasting skewers when not in use. Surviving antique examples exhibit a variety of decorative features, including shaped finials, pierced hearts, and ornamental hooks. These details are particularly associated with early American and Pennsylvania German decorative ironwork.
This newly made interpretation follows the forms of traditional hearth equipment, combining practical construction with restrained folk art ornament. Produced in small quantities, each piece is individually hand-filed and finished rather than given a uniform mass-produced appearance.
